Closest Competitor Of Tandberg
Poly Com is a company that can best be described by Tandberg as the closest competitor to Tandberg. Like Tandberg Poly Com is a manufacturer of videoconferencing systems that are supplied the world over. However, Tandberg is a pioneer and leader in the field of vide conferencing equipment and is credited with being the first to provide a live video conferencing facility in the year 2002. Tandberg is located in Oslo, Norway and are involved in product development, sales and distribution. They have offices in New York City, USA, which handles the sales and distribution of their vide conferencing products. Apart from Poly Com Tandnerg's other main competitors are Radvision and Codian. Some of the smaller competitors are VTEL and Aethra.
Tandberg introduced their first telephone for ISDN in 1989 and subsequently launched the fully integrated Vision H.320 picture telephone was launched in 1993. Tandberg moved on to higher performing systems such as the Grand Vision and the Master Vision series which culminated in the launch of the Compact Vision and the Vision600 in the 1900. However, this was just the beginning of the advanced technology that Tandberg was destined to introduce to the world of telecommunications. Poly Com and the other competitors were always close on the heels of the developments of Tandberg, trying to get ahead with some technological advancement or the other, but Tandberg always had something or the other to make up for the lack in their competitors achievements. In order to keep up with their dedication to serve the telecommunications industry, Tandberg acquired two sales and distribution companies in North America, establishing a firm foothold in the single largest videoconferencing market in the world.
By the late 1990's Tandberg acquired the Norwegian technology company Internet Technology AS which had expert developers who were experienced with the ITU H.323 standard. These were engineers who were especially from Voice over Internet protocol, or VoIP projects like the world's first commercial H.323 VoIP service launched in 1997 with Telenor another leader in the field of Internet communications. In 2000 Poly Com moved into IP based videoconferencing using the maturing H.323 standard, However Tandberg was a step ahead of all the market competition and established an entire product line that was IP capable. Since 2000, Tandberg has expanded its product line greatly, by adding enterprise-class MCU's, Gateways, service-provider class MCUs and H.323 Gatekeepers. In 2001 the company also acquired a consultancy company Delante AS which enabled it to focus more on external software integration and bindings, especially the Microsoft platform.
Since the Tandberg company was founded in 1933 as Tandbergs Radiofabrikk meaning 'Tandberg's Radio Factory' by electronics engineer Vebjørn Tandberg, and initially producing loudspeakers and receivers to the first reel-to-reel tape recorder in 1952, Tandberg has become known world wide for its high end audio systems and live video conferencing systems. The company has come a long way since 1933 and will definitely keep it's place in the sun for many more years to come.
